What's Coming Up in TCDS ART!

Welcome to a busy new year in the Art Studio! You will begin to see process photos and some finished work this week on our current projects. With fresh project designs and limitless student creativity, Mrs. Paradis and Mrs. Phelps are looking forward to a beautiful year. Before photos, here are some behind-the-scenes things we want you to be aware of:

First, we're preparing a presentation for you for Curriculum Night, August 31 and September 1. It will be about standards and what kids can expect to learn, and hopefully answer the question "What do they DO in that Art Room anyway? Please join us at 5PM, 5:30PM or 6PM to get an up close look at everything from prep through project in the Art Studio.

Second, we are helping students prepare information for you for Conferences, so your students can lead you through a comprehensive picture of their school accomplishments.

Third, we are participating in a school-wide, organized program of cross-curricular project design, so that teachers can strengthen core academic classes by adding art components. This is a work in progress that will be happening throughout the year.

Finally, we are just beginning to talk as a Specialist Team about the Go Live Special Event at the end of the year. It's a school community event to showcase every student's accomplishments in Art, Music, Sports, Tech, Spanish and some of our exciting Clubs. It will be held on May 7th this year, so plan ahead!

Welcome to ART at TCDS 2015-2016

Welcome To Art!

2015-2016

TCDS Studio Art includes 2nd through 8th grade in a rich curriculum that includes Art History, drawing, painting, ceramics, printmaking, and multicultural studies.

Early elementary Art studies focus on introduction to different media, imagination, and the process of making art. Grades reflect effort and improvement of skills. Later elementary grades continue with more challenging assignments to extend their use of media and knowledge of world art. We begin to focus on past and contemporary artists to learn from a variety of styles while expressing students’ own original ideas.

Middle school Students have increasingly advanced challenges with more complex media and use of specialized tools. We design assignments from art history and students use what they have learned from other artists to build their own unique styles.

Assignments support the National Core Art Standards. The Art Department challenges students on an individualized basis. By nature Art is highly differentiated among students and should reflect their viewpoints and individual imaginations. To grade a student’s work, we use a variety of assessments that include the process of creating art and the effort shown, in addition to the final outcome.

The TCDS Art Department is led by two teachers, Mrs. Kala Phelps and Mrs. Jean Paradis. Mrs. Phelps teaches on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Mrs. Paradis teaches on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Please feel free to email your child’s art teacher with any questions.

Thank you, and we are looking forward to seeing all our new and returning students! Don’t forget to visit our blog weekly to see pictures of what your children are creating. http://tcdsartdepartment.blogspot.com/  or you can link from our eplanner.

Welcome to 2013-2014 School Year!

The Art Studio at TCDS

2013-2014
2nd -8th Grade

It’s a new year for TCDS Art! We look forward to welcoming our “veteran” students and new students to a new year old doing, learning, and creating.  Grades 2-8 will study famous artists, history, and world cultures while making cool, beautiful, and amazing artworks all year.  We will do painting, ceramics, printmaking, collage, sculpture, mixed media, drawing, pastels and more!

2nd and 3rd Grades – Students will be learning to use a wide variety of media and become acquainted with famous artists and themes. The processes of art are emphasized.

4th and 5th Grades – Students will grow their art skills by learning new media, as well as a major focus on artists through history – their techniques, styles and inspirations.

6th and 7th Grades – Students will continue learning about art in the context of world cultures. Kids work more independently and we have a great emphasis on personal style.

8th Grade – Students choose art as an elective. They learn advanced techniques, use more specialized media, and choose their project independently.  They finish the year with an independent study they design and produce with our assistance.

In April, after months of selecting, cataloging, and mounting, we take hundreds of pieces of student art to the Pima County Fair Art Show. It’s brilliant! Don’t miss it!

Mrs. Paradis and Mrs. Phelps are committed to showing each student that there is an artist within – and that each one can use his or her creative power to make awesome art!

It’s going to be a great year!

2013 Pima County Fair

Maybe you can find your child's art if you were not able to attend the fair.  Please note that we did not get to photograph all pieces since there were over 600 from Tucson Country Day School. Don't worry you will be getting your child's artwork back before the last day of school.

Last Year's Pima Country Art Fair!

We are in the process of getting ready for the art fair.  We can't wait to share all of the amazing art our school has been producing.  Last year (2012) we entered 603 pieces of art. How many will we have this year?
